Ipazia 2010-2013

The “hypatias” are works of 2010-2013. They are a tribute to Hypatia of Alexandria of Egypt, who lived at the end of 300. Mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher, representative of pagan neo-platonic philosophy, she was accused of witchcraft and killed by a mob of rioting Christians. This made her a martyr of paganism and, especially, of free thought. She devoted her life to observing and teaching the events in the heavens and the movement of the earth around its axis and the sun. She foreshadowed the elliptical shape of heavenly orbits.

Mazzocca&Pony sublimates these ellipses into a new body, or better, into a skeleton of light to bring back to life the Hypatia who lives in all free-thinking women and also men.

There are nine white figures-sculptures, each of them filled with 126-130 transparent plastic spheres, containing various messages:

The first the inner journey of Hypatia:contains the photographic reproduction of the work that marked the artist’s inner shift.

The second is the Hypatia of the colours of the spirit: all the spheres contain soil (utilised in her earlier frescoes) in various colours.

The third is the Hypatia purity of heart:the spheres are filled with white feathers, a symbol transmitted by the ancient Egyptians and representing purity and lightness rising above human misery.

The fourth of the four elements is the Hypatia: earth, fire, water, and air.

The fifth is the Hypatia of the arts: each of the 126 spheres contains a reference to the arts of our days: painting, sculpture, photography, cinema, theatre, music, literature, poetry, etc.

The sixth is devoted to play and peace: each of the 130 spheres contains about 160 toy tanks in six different colours; they are utilised for the game of Risiko in which the winner is the tank that gets closest to a pre-set target. A skill-and-chance game and a patent metaphor of life; a clear message of peace: let us play, let us have fun, but let us never wage real war.

The seventh is the Hypatia of the worlds, many “worlds” created by second-hand clothes, compacted very tightly with wire, and then a resin to preserve them over time.

The eighth, Hypatia in the time of the sun,was also created at the same time as the others. It has a “base skeleton” similar to that of its sisters, only stronger, to support the “Armillary sphere”: the model of the heavenly sphere. The various rings are the projections of the equator, meridians, and parallels. It is a sculpture conceived to be kept outdoors because the current time can be read thanks to the shadow cast by the earth-sphere.

This sculpture is a tribute paid not only to Hypatia of Alexandria of Egypt; it is also paid to all those who contend with the thirst to know this world and to belong to it.

The ninth and last is the Hypatia of history repeating itself. The real woman died and burned … fate would have it, the part of the artist’s studio was on fire accidentally and … The Hypatia with his death still lives on!
